What am I?

Who am I?

Assalamu-Alaykum (Peace be Upon you)

What am I?

I contain vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and C. I consist of sugars like glucose and fructose and minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, zinc, copper, iodine, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron and phosphate. I am a natural antiseptic, have an anti-inflammatory effect and contain anti-oxidants which help fight cancer cells. I have been used for many years to treat wounds, stomach ulcers, stomach aches, accelerate skin healing, treat sore-throats and reduce phlegm. I am easily digested by the most sensitive stomach and help the kidney, blood and intestines function better. Compared to the same amount of sugar I contain 40% less calories without compromising on energy levels.

Yes, you guessed it, I am none other than sweet Honey. These are only a few properties of Honey which have been discovered in recent years but the benefits of Honey were described by Almighty Allah and the great Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) some 1400 years ago. Almighty Allah says, ‘ There comes from their bellies a drink of many colours in which is a healing for mankind‘ [Q16:69]. The great Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) is reported to have said, ‘ Regard two things which have curative properties obligatory on yourselves, the Quran and Honey‘, and also ‘Whoever eats Honey three times a month will not meet with any great disaster‘.

The great Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to love sweet things and Honey. It was his Sunnah (practise) to drink Honey water in the morning on an empty stomach. This was a very prudent thing to do as science has now discovered that Honey when accompanied with water increases its bactericidal (bacteria killing) properties two-fold, and Honey water diffuses in to the blood stream in approximately 7 minutes thus rapidly increasing energy levels (perfect for those of us who miss breakfast, who needs lucozade? or coffee, well…).

Is anyone still reading this post? Or have I bored you with science you thought you had left behind when you finished High School? Insha-Allah (with the Will of Allah) taking Honey or Honey water with the intention of it being a Sunnah of the great Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), not only will it be physically benefiting but also get us closer to the dear Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and insha-Allah gain the pleasure of Almighty Allah.

May Almighty Allah give us the Taufiq (Divine aid) to follow the Sunnah.

And Allah knows best.

  1. Is it true that locally produced honey also helps control hayfever?

May Almighty Allah give you the divine aid to continue writing such informative posts.

  2. I admire the way in which this article has been constructed.
As for honey its truly amazing, i was suffering from a cold over the weekend :-( and was drowning myself in good ol lemsip ewww and didnt think to have some honey, however upon reading this article i got home and had some lovly runny honey in water and by the next morning i was feeling a great deal better.Honey is a truly remarkable substance, alhamdulillah we are blessed to have been presented with such incredible knowledge in the Quran as well through the teachings and actions of Prophet Muhammad PBUH

  3. Local honey has pollen and propolis in it and it’s this that’s believed to give people hay fever and aggravate these sorts of complaints, particularly with children. Taking pure local honey containing local pollen every morning could be enough to help build up the immune system and may help to bring relief to these conditions (start before the hayfever season). And Allah knows best.

  4. For info!
Honey is the only food that does not spoil. Honey found in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs has been tasted by archaeologists and found edible.

  5. Subhanallah! (Allah is Pure) I didn’t know that! No wonder the honey that I had in my cupboard was just as good as the day I bought it!
    Jazakallah Hudhud!

  6. There is a book by the name of Tibbe Nabawi – Prophetic Medicine.
It contains among other things the benefit and healing properties and functions of certain things including Honey, Olive oil, Black seed oil etc.
    Highly recoomended.
