Swings and Roundabouts

We’ve all heard that saying, ‘what goes around comes around’ - indeed, we’ve probably said it ourselves a few times.

Well it was during yet another news update on BBC Radio 4 which was describing the impending economic crisis, that the saying popped into my head.

Why, you might ask?

Ok, keeping the above saying in mind, it is an intrinsic teaching of Islam that whatever Amaal (action) a person does has a direct impact upon the affairs of the world. That whatever action, no matter how small, if it is good in nature it will bring good consequences and if it is bad in nature then it will bring about the wrong results.

So what is happening in the world today?

A global financial crisis caused by the gradual economic meltdown in the US, the slaughter of innocent civilians in countries which I won’t mention the name of, individual people who are living in a seeming picture of paradise externally but internally their hearts are torn apart – whose fault is all this?

Is it the governments? Is it the banks that won’t lend to each other? Is it individuals who will do anything in their power to make the next million?

On the night of Me’eraj - the night when Muslims believe that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ascended the seven heavens in one night for his meeting with his Creator, it is stated in Hadith (Traditions of the Prophet PBUH) that the Prophet (PBUH) saw certain things rising up to the heavens and certain things coming down to earth.

When he questioned Jibrail (AS) (Gabriel) he was told that the things that were rising up were the actions of the people of earth and the things coming down were Allah’s decisions as to what would happen on earth, based upon the actions.

So, what we do, individually and collectively, has a direct bearing upon what happens here. And whether the consequence affects our own personal life, or whether it is in the shape of a war happening a continent away, just as the saying goes, ‘what goes around comes around’.

And one thing is for certain to all those who are not convinced or plead that ignorance is bliss.

That is the fact that whatever happens upon our planet, in our time, affects all of us – whether directly or indirectly. And that means that we are all responsible – whether directly or indirectly.

Just as Einstein pointed out, ‘every action has an equal and opposite reaction’, I would like to add, that sometimes that reaction is felt in a different way, but that indeed, our actions do bear a consequence.

So whether its the credit crunch, our own employment aspirations or the occupation of Palestine – maybe the answer to all these problems lie within each and every one of us…

Well in that case, if we bettered ourselves and helped each other, then maybe, just maybe, instead of saying ‘what comes around goes around’, we can start working with the philosophy of ‘one good turn deserves another’.

And Allah knows best.

Ma’as-salaam
