What is Islam? – Articles of Faith

Ok, the first of our ‘What is Islam?’ series deals with the most important things that Muslims should know and believe in – the articles of Faith.

And as well as these being beliefs for Muslims, I think that it is good, basic knowledge for all to know, so that we can separate fact from fiction…

So, for a person to accept Islam, he or she must recite Ash-hadu-al Laa Ilaaha Illallah, Ash-hadu-anna Muhammadur Rasoolullah which means that I bear Witness that there is no God but Allah and I bear Witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (PBUH).

This is the Muslim testification of Faith which is supposed to be recited by Muslims throughout the day to increase the strength of their Faith. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) made a point of this and Muslims are especially urged to make this the final thing they say before sleeping and the first thing upon awakening.

Then there are the beliefs.

Muslims believe that Allah is Alone and has no partner, no equal. We believe that Muhammad (PBUH) is the Final Messenger, a slave of Allah like the rest of humanity, but the most exalted, and ranked above of all mankind.

We believe in the Last Day and the Reckoning, the Angels, the Jinns and Shaytaan (the Devil). We believe in Jannah (Heaven) and Jahannum (Hell) and also something called Taqdeer (that everything has been pre-ordained by Allah).

At this point I would just like to say that what I have done here is merely to list the main articles of Faith for a Muslim. Not only are there many more, but each of the ones mentioned above can be explained individually at length.

After the beliefs come the commandments which have to be performed, like Hajj (Pilgrimage), Zakaat (giving alms), Sawm (fasting during Ramadhaan) and Salaah (prayer).

Anyway, that was just a brief guide to the main articles of Faith for a Muslim. As I stated at the beginning, it is very brief and basic, but enough knowledge for Muslims and non-Muslims to be certain about what Muslims do and do not believe in.

And please, if you wish to know more, or feel that I have missed out something very important, just leave a comment and let me know.

And Allah knows best.

Ma’as-salaam.
