Bishops, Scholars and Onion Bhajis!!

Assalaamu-Alaykum – Peace be Upon you

So, the evening of Monday 14 July 2008 was a very interesting one for me.

I was invited (in my capacity as driver!) to have dinner with a group of local Ulema (Scholars) together with Bishops from around the world at Ashiq’s Restaurant in Dewsbury.

The Bishops were in town as they were preparing for their Lambeth Conference later on in the week, and I had the chance to meet clergy from places as far as Adelaide, Melbourne, Tanzania and Faislabad!

The food was nice, and the conversation was just keeping to a nice buzz, and as far as I know included topics as diverse as Shariah Law, unity of mankind and even onion bhajis!

After we had finished, Sheikh Moulana Yakub Qasmi of the Shariah Council, Dewsbury gave a small speech, encouraging all the leaders of different Faiths to work towards the common cause of helping mankind.

Personally, I was fortunate enough to meet the Bishop of Adelaide, the Rt Revd Stephen Pickard, who kept on asking me about the various delicacies we were sampling, including onion bhajis!

All in all, it was a nice evening and one, which the Ulema and the clergy agreed, should be done again so that connections can be strengthened and important topics discussed.

Jazakallah khair (may Allah give the best recompense) to Mufti Yusuf Akudi and Bishop Tony for setting the whole thing up, not to mention Ashiq’s for the food!

Ma’as-salaam – With Peace
