Spiritual Decoration

Assalaamu-Alaykum – Peace be Upon you

So we’ve just about re-decorated our main living room at home, and alhumdulillah (all Praise belongs to Allah) it’s looking really good!

The new carpet’s really soft, and together with the new Moroccan style lamp and a bit of moving around of the existing furniture, it’s looking very nice, contemporary and really quite stylish – alhumdulillah!

It was whilst I was watching my energetic sisters change things around and especially listening to Tahera (the eldest of the two, but younger than me!) generally convince my dear mother of all the things that were ‘needed’ (!), I remembered a very poignant phrase which I have heard one of the scholars (can’t remember which one) talk about…..

That these days we spend so much time, effort, energy and money beautifying our homes and ourselves externally, we do not seem to understand the need to spend some time, effort, energy and money to beautify ourselves internally.

We might have the most expensive carpets, or even the most dazzling bathrooms, but does the shine in the bathroom mean that there is no shine left in our personalities, our Akhlaq (manners) and our morals?

Is it the case, that we’ve got the the grandest of plans and designs to renovate our houses but when it comes to making plans for our spiritual advancement through helping people out, doing our prayers, fasting and giving in charity, we come a cropper?

Therefore, I urge everybody, myself included, that we do not get to a stage where our houses are sparkling but our hearts and dull and dead.  Because although Islam does not prohibit us from spending out of which Allah has given us, it does become prohibited when the spending becomes an obstacle in our duties and devotions to Allah and one another.

Anyway, just thought I would share these musing with everyone, and insha-Allah (with the Will of Allah) may we decorate our interiors better and more lavishly than we decorate our exteriors.  Because after all that is said and done, it is the quality of the internal decoration that our Creator is looking for when we stand before Him and ask for entry into Jannah (Paradise), and if that is lacking on that Day, then I’m afraid it will not be as easy as ripping the wallpaper down and starting again…..

And Allah knows best

Ma’as-salaam – With Peace

This post is dedicated to my sisters/in-house interior decorators Tahera and Hajra – may Allah give them the Taufiq (Divine aid) to decorate their Jannah better than they have decorated our living room!
