Interesting times for Mr Obama!

Assalaamu-Alaykum – Peace be Upon you

Although I tend to keep myself away from blogging about politics generally, every once in a while, even I have to jump on the bandwagon and discuss what everybody else is discussing!

And so to President Obama’s speech in Egypt.  Hmm, you can certainly say it was interesting!  With his usual flair for choosing the right words and self-confident delivery, Mr Obama, it seems, is stretching his hand out to the Muslim world further than any of his predecessors.

Although the American-Israeli ‘unbreakable’ friendship was also mentioned (no surprises there!), I have to say that even I was a little encouraged by his words.  And the one thing that caught my attention the most was his acknowledgement of the suffering of the Palestinian people – a statement of bold diplomacy.

With that one statement President Obama has made many new friends and raised numerous eyebrows throughout the Muslim and non-Muslim world.  I don’t want to jump on the bandwagon and start celebrating like a lot of people have, but I do understand that even rhetoric such as that, coming from the President of the USA after its recent history is something worth reflecting upon.

So Mr Obama, well done.  With those words in Cairo, you now have people’s attention, people are now starting to anticipate what you are going to do.  But it must always be remembered, that words will only go so far and will only allay fears until a certain point.  The world now waits with baited breath to see if Mr Obama can back up those inspirational words with inspirational deeds…..

Ma’as-salaam – With Peace
